french bulldog puppies?

I am interested in getting a french bull dog, but first I need to
know about them, where can I get information about the breed
and health problems they may have.

I would not rely on any published information. As a French Bulldog owner I usually get a kick out of the incorrect information about the breed in dog articles and breed books.

Make sure you read the AKC standard for Frenchies very well so you know what the should possess. Any frenchie you buy should be ONLY AKC, it is not fool proof, but it is by far the safest registry.

There are 2 groups you should join to learn about Frenchies:
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/Friends-Of-Frenchies/
http://www.frenchbulldogworldwide.com

I am on both, this is the best way to learn about the breed, from others who actually have them. Both groups are VERY friendly!

Also go to an AKC dog show to see them in person!

Things to remember when you go looking for puppies:
They should ALWAYS see straight! When they are looking straight at you, all you should see is the black of their eyes, NEVER any white or pink should show in the center near the nose bridge! They should never have buggy eyes either. They should not have a muzzle, their face should be flat.

They should be healthy looking and happy, eyes and nose should be clear and not irritated looking. Make sure the puppies look well groomed, if they do not take the time to clip their nails and clean their coat, they won’t have time or the concern enough to breed healthy dogs either!

Frenchies are a natural breed, their tails are very short and the ears stand up. This is all natural, they should never be cropped or docked! They will be born with little bear-like ears that will grow and flop over, then eventually stand upright how they will for it’s life time.

People say Frenchies have a hard time breathing, and other things. This is WRONG. Just like any breed there are unhealthy specimens. This is from poor breeding and usually the product of breeding 2 dogs that are not healthy themselves. French Bulldogs should be healthy and should breath without problems or noise.

Features of the head are very strong with breedings. For example if one of the parents has an awful jaw… the puppies will too. Keep that in mind.

Do not look for available puppies on-line by just searching, this will usually only lead you to what you should not be buying. If they are advertising at the top of your search, don’t even bother clicking, they are JUST looking to make a buck off you, not to provide you with a healthy pet!

If they accept Pay-pal or the site looks like a virtual vending machine for puppies, RUN! If Frenchies are one of a handful of breeds they offer, RUN! If they also offer designer dogs of any kind, RUN!

Never buy puppies on puppyfind, I cannot count the number of people who "bought" a puppy and never received it, that site is for scammers and sellers of sick puppies.

Never buy a puppy from a broker (a person who buys litters of puppies and resells them for more $ to just make a profit) They are only able to buy poorly bred puppies like this, so that is what they will provide you with, poorly bred puppies!

NEVER buy puppies from pet stores! They come from puppymills. And if you ask the store if they buy their puppies from puppymills they will say absolutely NOT. They have planned on you asking this, so they use a middle man who buys the puppies from the puppymills for them, so they can legally state that they do not buy from puppymills, because… they technically bought them from the middle man!

Puppies are a business for many stores and people. They plan on covering their rear or they do not make money. So it can be hard to see though the bad ones, because they work on looking right.

The best place to find a responsible breeder is the Breed’s Parent Club. They will be happy to educate you about the breed as well.

Please remember that AKC registration is not a guarantee of quality, so it is important to buy your puppy from a responsible breeder.
Here are some suggested questions one can use to determine if a breeder is truly responsible:

    1. Is she an AKC registered breeder of good standing and an active member of her breed Parent Club?

    2. Are there AKC Champions listed on the pedigree, showing that the breeder spends her time & money to prove the quality of her breeding stock through competition?

    3. Are all the animals kept in clean, comfortable, healthy, loving circumstances?

    4. Did the breeder conduct extensive interviews with you and every member of your family?

    5. Have the sire & dam received all available health clearances, (eg. OFA Hip & Eye, Thyroid testing, THESE VARY FOR EACH BREED)

    6. Is she willing to honestly discuss any possible genetic defects that may exist in her line?

    7. Does she have a Sales Contract?

    8. Does the contract contain a clause stipulating that you spay or neuter the puppy before it reaches a certain
    age?

    9. Does the contract contain a clause stating that if at any time in the puppy’s life, you can no longer care for it, it must be returned to the breeder? (This ensures that no animal bred by this breeder will ever end up in a shelter).

    10. Will the breeder maintain contact with you for the life of the puppy to answer questions and help in general?
