How many puppies does a French Bulldog normally have?

I was thinking about raising French Bulldogs and was curious on their birthing habits. Are they good about delivering on their own, how many pups are usually in the litter. Are there any health related issues known with the Frenchies ect…. If there is a known website where more info can be found that would be great.

Frenchies are not know for large litters. 3 to 5 puppies is average. 3 being a normal litter 5 being large. Though some have more than this. Any Bracycephalic dog (pushed in nose) has many health related issues, also bulldog breeds are more suseptible to birthing problems and many puppies are born cesearean. Usually a female that has to have one always will have to have one in subsequeint litters. Frenchies are prone to eye problems, skin problems, breathing and respitory problems, bad joints and many other ailments. Get your dogs fully checked for all genetic testing before thinking about breeding. Also be sure that your dog is totally under the standard of a good Frenchie before beginning to dive into the breeding world.

I would try to find a French Bulldog breeder in your area (a good one, not a backyard breeder) and work with them. A person breeding for the love of the breed (the only responsible way to breed) will be happy to take you, another person interested in breeding for the love of the breed, under their wing, so to speak. Try the AKC website (www.akc.org) and talk to your vet, who can help identify who is actually a good breeder and who is not.

2-4 average, 5 way large. Most (as in more than 90%) are C-sections which is expensive surgery that requires lots of extra care to dams and in watching nursing puppies.
